There are literally thousands of potential contaminants in our “drinking” water, and the most reliable way to treat them is to purify the water using reverse osmosis.
Simply put it uses a semi-permeable membrane as a “super filter” and only allows pure water to pass through it. Almost all of the dissolved solids are caught by the membrane and are rejected in the “concentrate”. The reject water is put down the drain and the pure water is collected slowly in storage vessels until needed. The Kinetico systems send this water through a specific carbon filter right before it goes into your glass or carafe. This final polishing assures that it tastes perfect every time! There is a misconception that filtered water is the same as purified water, and almost everyone has a fridge filter that they assume is protecting them from the possible contaminants at home. The filter is merely there to reduce the levels of gases and make it taste better. It does NOT remove any of the dissolved solids that can only be reduced by purification.
