What are pathogens?
Pathogens are biological contamination like viruses, bacteria, parasites, and anything with DNA.
Pathogens are present in many types of water, which is exactly why Chlorine and ammonia is used to sanitize municipal water. The largest outbreak of parasites (Cryptosporidium) in a municipal water source happened 1993 in Milwaukee Wisconsin, so even those systems are not foolproof. Recent studies indicate that wells have a 20% chance at any time of testing present for e. Coli or total Coliform bacteria, and if they were tested every month for one year the percentage goes up to 90%. The water is prefiltered down to 5 microns and then passed thru a chamber at a maximum flow rate. This chamber exposes the water to ultraviolet light and the DNA of the pathogen is damaged by the time it exits the chamber. The pathogens are not immediately killed, rather they are unable to reproduce (sterile) which makes them effectively harmless.
