What causes Odors?
Offensive "Rotten-egg" odor is typically caused by Hydrogen Sulfide in the groundwater.
Odor treatment is actually one of the most complex problems we can encounter since it needs to be identified as to its true source before treatment can be implemented. The most common source is Hydrogen Sulfide gas dissolved in your water, which releases into the air once it is no longer under pressure. There are other sources that must also be identified to have a complete treatment, and here are a few.
- Hydrogen Sulfide gases in the source water. This is treated with varying types of equipment for the Whole House at the "Point of Entry".
- Bacterial colonies in the plumbing of the house causing gas buildup, typically in rarely used faucets. These are treated with an Ultraviolet Sterilizer at the "Point of Entry".
- Hot water odor is almost always caused by an Anode Rod in the water heater. This rod is extremely difficult to remove/replace and is actually considered a routine maintenance item by the water heater manufacturer. Removal and plugging are the simplest solutions, but replacing it with an aluminum rod usually fixes this source.
- Funky supply lines can cause odors, especially in the braided hoses. This is one of those odd reactions with some water on the liner material inside the braided hoses, and changing them with new usually takes care of it. If you have only one sink in the house that has odor, this is usually the culprit.
In a complete whole-house system we recommend a Carbon system and Ultraviolet Sterilizer to adsorb the incoming gases and sterilize bacteria trying to get into the house. This barrier protects you from embarrassing odors as well as potentially harmful pathogens. your laundry smells fresher, and brushing teeth is no longer disgusting. If you have a tank-style water heater we recommend a service on the anode rod or considering a unit that doesn't need an anode rod like a Stainless Steel or Fiberglass unit.
